Description
These beautiful mother of pearl opera glasses - marked "IRIS - PARIS" on the top of the lens and "France" on the bottom of the top brass frame piece. They are from the mid 1800's and are in super condition - I have seldom seen opera glasses in this good a shape. All the mother of pearl is in perfect condition - even the mother of pearl on the extension tubes is in great shape. They operate perfectly and smoothly. They focus to a bright clear image. There is minor oxidation on some of the brass but this should polish off, if desired. They measure 3 7/8 inches wide, 1 1/2 inches deep, 2 1/4 inches high w/eyepieces withdrawn, and 3 inches with eyepieces fully extended. They come with a black leather pouch with minor tears on each side and with a fully functional lid that snaps shut with a clever little spring device. The case interior is lined with bright red silk or satin.
Every collector needs at least one set of Opera Glasses in her\his collection and these are a great example of the blend of the technology and art of the period.
